Birmingham, Alabama radio personality “Funny Maine” of 95.7 Jamz recently interviewed rapper Megan Thee Stallion and awkwardly inquired about her manager Mother not being present. Typically this wouldn’t be a controversial question, however; Megan’s mother recently passed away. How did this happen? I’m not a Journalist, but I do study them. The goal is to be the best in my industry and my idol is the Voice of New York; Angie Martinez. The best journalists/interviewers have a way of endearing their subjects so that they get extremely comfortable and end up revealing more than intended. Angie has gotten this down to a science. Of course, it’s taken years for her to perfect, and I’m sure if you were to ask her; she would say she would like to improve in some way. I’ve mentioned before that one thing that initially kept me from launching my blog is that I have a tendency to over research. Being over prepared can be a good thing or a bad thing. It can be a good thing because you can avoid making rookie mistakes such as the one “Funny Maine” made in this situation, and in my case, it could have been a bad thing in that it almost hindered me from taking first steps, and I could have missed out on opportunities.
In the music industry, it’s not out of the ordinary to have a last minute interview sprung on you. In those moments, you have to make it work; however; I’m going to assume this interview was not a surprise; as Megan was on a promo run to a few different radio stations. Which is why I’m extremely confused as to how a quick Google search didn’t turn up the news that Megan’s mother had recently passed away. Does he not have interns or an assistant to do his due diligence, since he seems to be too busy to conduct it himself? “Funny Maine” also claimed that he had “2- pages of research” that he found, and “unfortunately” he didn’t come across arguably the most pertinent information for this interview.
I know of Megan Thee Stallion via social media. I’m not familiar with her music, but I know enough to know that she is a pretty big deal and is adored by ladies and men alike. Because of her popularity, I knew that her mother had recently passed away as had her grandmother not too long ago.
“Funny Maine” has since apologized, which; ok…. An apology shouldn’t have been a question, I just hope he takes his job a little more seriously going forward. As for Megan, clearly, she was raised right. As the personality haphazardly asked about her recently transitioned mother, all she could do was fall silent and clutch her imaginary pearls. I pray that today on Mother’s Day, she has some kind of peace and tranquility.
